Medical Simulation Leads to Excellence in Patient Care A key part of preparing for the clinical experiences that begin in year 3 is spending time in our simulation centers. Each VCOM campus has a Sim Center with four simulation rooms, several multipurpose rooms and leading technology, including intricate models and manikins. In the Sim Center, students practice dealing with cardiac and pulmonary emergencies, pediatric emergencies, and births in a safe, low-risk environment under the watchful eye of our faculty members. Students practice critical decision-making, learning to process a lot of information even during emergency situations. In their first year, the manikin-based simulation program is a capstone, allowing students to apply what they have learned during the year. Throughout their second year, students’ experiences in the Sim Center reinforce the College’s curriculum. Standardized Patients Our standardized patient (SP) programs help teach students to communicate effectively with patients. Members of the local community are trained to portray a number of physical or mental dysfunctions. Interacting with SPs gives students the opportunity to

develop vital interpersonal skills.
