About our Students

Celebrating a Richly Diverse Student Body

T he Osteopathic philosophy is a belief in a holistic approach to human health care, which focuses on caring for the patient as a whole. Osteopathic physicians have traditionally served in both urban and rural communities, in populations of a broad socioeconomic range and diverse backgrounds. VCOM seeks to carry on this tradition and educate a future workforce in a time when health reform, demographic changes and economic challenges

are formidable. By recognizing barriers that exist for rural students, first-generation college students, students from socioeconomically depressed areas and populations not historically represented in medicine, and by purposely removing those barriers, we have recruited a student body rich in diversity who will deeply care about the health of all future patients.

VCOM Recognized for Diversity

VCOM was named as a 2023 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award recipient by INSIGHT into Diversity .

VCOM has also been recognized for over nine

consecutive years by Minority Access, Inc. as an Institutional Role Model for Diversity .
