VCOM 2023 Annual Report
Student Scholarship Highlights (continued)
Edward M. Feldman, DO Memorial Scholarship Ellena Varnadoe, Class of 2026 – Ocala, Florida
“My father was a great father and role model, and he taught me to uphold the honorable values that VCOM has endorsed. From being someone who lived in poverty and saw firsthand how the social determinants of health can truly dictate one’s health, I understand how someone’s mentality, financial situation and living status has on one’s health outcomes.”
Jeanne Horne Stosser Endowed Medical Scholarship
Marshall “Bradley” Walker, Class of 2025 – Marion, Virginia “The more medical training I receive, the clearer my path forward becomes. With the completion of my degree, I will pursue a rural, community-based residency program aimed at maximizing my skills in ALL specialties. Honing these skills will allow me to provide near-specialized care in the primary setting thereby eliminating barriers of travel and referral which overwhelm many in the Appalachian region.”
John K. Skelton Endowed Medical Scholarship Lauren Witmer, Class of 2026 – Roanoke County, Virginia
“Treating generations of patients has been a lifetime goal of mine since it will have such a broad impact on the community. Ultimately, I want to serve the underserved and help ensure everyone receives the treatment they deserve.”
H. Pat and Nancy Artis Endowed Medical Scholarship Nicholas Wright, Class of 2026 – Riner, Virginia
“I feel like I have a duty to serve the people that I have lived and worked alongside of for so long. I hope to utilize my knowledge of this area to accomplish VCOM’s mission in ways that might be overlooked by others, such as overseeing EMS agencies (possibly even the ones that I currently work at) and working at the state level to create viable community paramedicine programs.”
