Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM3) Residency Program
T he VCOM–Virginia Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal (ONMM3) Residency Program was initiated in response to the growing population of patients in need of osteopathic medical care. It is a one-year program that residents complete after successfully completing a prior residency and they will earn another full residency certificate. The program provides training in the development of osteopathic clinical skills needed to diagnose and manage illnesses and injuries with an emphasis on manual skill approaches and pain differential diagnosis. The initial VCOM residency program was started in 2016 as an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) NMM-OMM+1 Residency. With the nationwide change in 2020 to all postgraduate residency training—allopathic and osteopathic—the program became accredited under the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and its name was changed to Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Residency (ONMM). VCOM offers the ONMM3 pathway to entry
into the residency program (entering into the third year of the program, and then completing one year of training). The ONMM3 program implements educational experiences necessary for residents to achieve the knowledge, psychomotor skills, interpersonal skills, professional attitudes and practical experience required of the ONMM specialist physician. VCOM faculty provide educational and clinical opportunities designed to allow the resident to assume progressive responsibility for patient care. This program emphasizes osteopathic medicine as a philosophy to be applied to medical practice, diagnostic examination skills, and a strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology—making residents all-around better physicians. The program fosters both academic and research growth to develop physicians who can confidently serve as program directors and researchers in osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine.
