VCOM-Virginia Via Research Recognition Day

T he 17th annual Via Research Keynote speaker Olutayo Sogunro, DO, MS, FACOS, FACS, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, spoke on the importance of clinical research to the practicing physician. Dr. Olutayo a VCOM alumna, Class of 2012, is a national mentor for the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and a member of the Quality Initiatives Committee of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. Plenary speaker P. Gunnar Brolinson, DO, FAOASM, FAAFP, FACOFP, vice provost for research at VCOM, lectured on “The State of Research at VCOM.” The poster sessions and poster competition returned to an in-person event. Participants were recognized for their research achievements in the areas of biomedical, clinical, educational and resident research. Recognition Day at VCOM-Virginia was held on Friday, February 25, 2022, on the VCOM-Virginia campus.

The day closed with the competition awards ceremony. Al Kozar, DO, FAOASM, RMSK, associate professor for sports medicine and OMM and NMM-OMM residency and fellowship director, received the fourth annual award for VCOM-Virginia’s Researcher of the Year for his contributions to the College’s research efforts. In order to be selected for this honor, the researcher must maintain an extramurally funded research program, proven scholarly output, successfully leverage REAP funding into extramural awards and actively engage students in research programs.
