Reaching Out to Our Home Communities (continued)

Virginia Outreach

Baby Book Drive — The VCOM-Virginia American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians (ACOP) student organization hosted a Baby Book Drive from June 1-4, 2021, to gather books for ages 0-6. They collected over 150 books through donations and their Amazon wishlist. These books went toward the Reach Out and Read Program for the New Beginnings Pediatrics Clinic. Reach Out and Read helps ensure that every child has the healthy foundation they need—cognitively, socially, and emotionally. “The Peds Club was so excited to help out New Beginnings Pediatrics collect over 150 books and start the Reach Out and Read Program! We hope to continue supporting them and keep improving childhood literacy as our goal in helping the community,” said Amy Kumar, ACOP President and Class of 2024. SAA Teddy Bear Drive — The Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO) hosted a Teddy Bear Drive. Students wrote cards and wrapped teddy bears to be delivered to children at local

hospitals. The organization distributed over 350 Teddy Bears to kids in the New River Valley area and beyond. MMSA Health Fair — The Muslim Medical Student Association (MMSA) held a health fair at the local mosque (ISNRV) for the Blacksburg community. The medical students and physicians provided OMM, health screenings and consults, and educational discussions. VCOM NMM OMM Resident Mukarram Razvi, DO, and VCOM Associate Chair for Primary Care for Rural and Medically Underserved Populations, Abraham Hardee, III, DO, PhD, AOBFP, donated their time for the day. OBGYN Diaper Drive — OBGYN hosted a drive to collect diapers and donations for the Montgomery County Baby Shop. The Baby Shop is a mission of St. Paul United Methodist and Blacksburg Presbyterian Churches to help families in need with children from newborn to age 5 in Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Radford and Montgomery County.

" We hope to continue supporting them and keep improving childhood literacy as our goal in helping the community.” — Amy Kumar, ACOP President and Class of 2024
