VCOM 2022 Annual Report

VCOM Supplies Physicians and Technology to Military Medicine

V COM’s research efforts are directly benefiting civilian as well as military needs. Some of the College’s research areas include patented processes or devices for neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injury; combat casualty care; rehabilitative care, syndromic surveillance and first response coordination. The Hybrid Resuscitation Training (HERT) Vest The HERT Vest TM was developed at VCOM as a high-fidelity medical procedural skills trainer capable of maintaining the look, feel, stress, emotionality, urgency and authenticity of many routine and critical medical procedures while remaining in the simulated setting. To accomplish this goal, the device is fully functional either on a manikin as a table-top procedural skills task trainer, or as a wearable medical simulator on a person for greater realism and immersion. The HERT Vest TM can simulate urgent medical procedures using current, acceptable medical techniques, equipment and standards of practice—on or off a wearer or manikin.

The vest is wearable, can be moulaged, scalable, safe, lightweight, durable, repairable, realistic and compatible. Because of its range of capabilities the HERT Vest TM is used by multiple military, government, trauma, medical, and education organizations and courses, including: • Department of Homeland Security Center for Domestic Preparedness • U.S. Air Force Special Tactics Squadron • HCA Healthcare Graduate Medical Education • Atrium Navicent Trauma Surgery Program • Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center Trauma Surgery Program Supplying Military Physicians Since its first graduating class, over 311 VCOM graduates have joined the U.S. Armed Services. Many of them have also participated in and continue to conduct research projects that benefit both the military and civilian communities in the country. • Tactical Combat Casualty Care Course • Advanced Trauma Life Support Course
