VCOM Student Club Fundraisers for COVID Emergency Response and Christmas for Malnourished Children T he Virginia and Carolina campuses’ student organizations, Hispanic Community Medical Outreach (HCMO), Student American Academy of Osteopathy (SAAO) and American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians (ACOP) hosted an Emergency COVID-19 response and a Virtual Christmas Tree fundraiser for the children and families of Honduras and El Salvador in the Children’s Nutrition Program at the Baxter Clinic, children of the Shalom and Heart of Mary orphanages. Through donations, they received $3,200. The money was used to provide children with Christmas gifts, essential items, medical care, medicine and food. COVID-19 has severely impacted the families the clinics serve due to the lack of work opportunities. earn money, and limited access to food. The VCOM clinic malnutrition program used the VCOM Medical Truck to deliver food every 10 days to these families. In El Salvador, the typical level of funding from the United States declined because of COVID-19, which made the funds from VCOM essential.
