Virginia Via Research Recognition Day 2020

T he 15th annual Via Virginia was held on Friday, February 28, 2020, at the College’s campus with 200 attendees. Keynote Speaker Helene Langevin, MD, has been the principal investigator of several NIH-funded studies investigating the role of connective tissue in low back pain and the mechanisms of acupuncture, manual and movement-based therapies. Dr. Langevin lectured on the topic of “Leading the Way in Whole Person Health.” Her current work focuses on the effects of stretching on inflammation resolution mechanisms within connective tissue and their relevance to chronic musculoskeletal pain and cancer. Plenary Speaker, Joanne Donoghue, MS, PhD, presented a lecture titled, “A Practical Approach to Clinical Research.” Dr. Donoghue’s which has been the focus of her clinical research for the past 15 years. Her research spans many populations in need of exercise and health improvement, including both geriatric patients and young female athletes. expertise is in exercise physiology and nutrition, To wrap up the afternoon, the second-annual VCOM Researcher of the Year award was given to Chris Reilly, PhD, Discipline Chair for Cellular Biology and Physiology, for his contributions to the College’s research efforts. One hundred fifteen participants were recognized for their research achievements

in the areas of biomedical, case reports, clinical and educational research. The Osteopathic Medical Network of Excellence in Education (OMNEE) once again sponsored the poster competition that allows medical residents to submit research they have conducted while at VCOM.
