I n Louisiana, VCOM combines significant rural hospital educational experiences, up to three rotations per year, coupled with education in more extensive facilities in Monroe, Shreveport, Lake Charles and Alexandria. These more extensive facilities provide experiences in hospital- based rotations such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, OB-GYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine. Louisiana Hospital Affiliates

Rural experiences begin in the students second year and provide “hands-on” early service- based inter-professional learning experiences. Third-year students spend six of nine months of their clinical education in community-based hospitals that hold 100 to 400 beds. They spend a minimum of three months in affiliated practices where core primary care training is available.

Louisiana has one of the most successful rural hospital organizations known as the Rural Hospital Coalition of Louisiana. The organization has developed an excellent working relationship with the state government and educational institutions and, through this work, has established rural hospitals that are financially healthy in a time where other states are seeing the doors of
