VCOM 2020 Annual Report

Street Family Joins The United Company Foundation in Investing in the Future of Healthcare T he $1 million scholarship challenge grant issued last year by The United Company Foundation is inspiring VCOM medical students to work in regions of Virginia where there are little to no doctors. The United Company Foundation scholarship currently supports two students each year with $40,000 during their last two years in medical school. In making plans to meet the challenge, VCOM is working with other donors who share a common interest in improving healthcare in the region. Students awarded the scholarships must agree to practice as a physician for three years after residency in a 15-county, three-city area. When Jimmie and Barbara Street heard about the challenge grant, they were quick to respond. “The cost of a medical education should not deter future physicians from the path they hope to pursue. In this area of the country, we need the students at VCOM to be driven by determination and the desire to do their best work and not by the fear of crushing debt. We hope our support will inspire others to join us in meeting The United Company

Barbara and Jimmie Street responded and urged others to joinThe United Company Foundation’s Challenge Grant.

In order to provide the best kind of care for the people living in rural and medically underserved areas, we must be proactive in giving young talent in the medical field the opportunity to succeed and thrive, right here at home.

Foundation challenge and return more physicians to practice in the region.”
