Virginia Via Research Day 2019

T he 14th annual Via Research Recognition Day at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine was held on February 22, 2019 with 101 posters and over 200 people in attendance. Keynote speaker Terrie E. Taylor, DO, Scientific Director of the Blantyre Malaria Project in Blantyre, Malawi, lectured on Cerebral Malaria. Dr. Taylor has worked in Malawi since 1986, spending six months a year conducting research and treating patients. The majority of her time is spent caring for children and infants as she researches cerebral malaria. Plenary speaker P. Gunnar Brolinson, DO, presented a lecture titled “The State of Research at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine” where he outlined the latest research being done at the college.

To wrap up the afternoon, the inaugural VCOM Researcher of the Year award was given to Pawel Michalak, DO, for his contributions to the College’s research efforts. 27 participants were recognized for their research achievements in the areas of Biomedical, Case Reports, Clinical, and Educational Research. The Osteopathic Medical Network of Excellence in Education (OMNEE) once again sponsored the poster competition that allows medical residents to submit research they have conducted while at VCOM.
