The Powerful Purpose of Research M edical research provides the foundation for discoveries that will benefit human and animal populations around the world. It can analyze disease trends, risk factors, provide new treatment options, develop new medicines, create or improve medical devices, reduce health care costs and provide new directions for patient care. For those suffering from disease, in one word—research provides hope. VCOM’s Research Division’s main objective is to support faculty members engaged in research. Our goals are: to build lasting, fruitful collaborations, to grow the number of extramural proposal submissions and grant awards and to increase productivity in development of long-term research programs. (Research Retreat, Research Rounds, Research Day) • Intramural funding opportunities (One Health Research Program, Research Eureka Accelerator Program) • Funding and sponsor searches and matches (Foundation Search and BIG Online databases) • Proposal development writing assistance; manuscript editing • Project team management and coordination (both cross-campus and with outside partners such as Virginia Tech and HCA) • Statistical consulting for both research and manuscript development • Intellectual property licensing and tech transfer (in-house assistance, IP Development consultant, three teams of IP attorneys) • Human subjects research oversight and protocol assistance (IRBNet Online, group and one-on-one training) VCOM’s Research Division’s main objective is to support faculty members engaged in research.
