VCOM 2019 Annual Report

Partnerships Collaboration is key to VCOM’s international outreach initiatives. In addition to having approvals from the local ministries of health, VCOM has medical school partnerships in each country. The goal of these partnerships is to share knowledge in evidence-based medicine and new technology to advance medical education globally. VCOM has established various levels of emergency medicine, OB/GYN care and pediatrics at affiliated international outreach sites. As needed during the training experience, VCOM faculty and students provide First Aid, First Responder and Basic Disaster Life Support training to clinical employees of partner organizations and international medical teams. New Residency Options Options for residency program participation are being introduced to selected OMNEE residency partners. This provides a Global Health Experience for OMNEE residents supporting VCOM rotations and VCOM alumni in maintaining their international training. Global Seminar for Health and Environment Through the Global Seminar for Health and Environment experience, medical students at VCOM and international schools have the opportunity to join together to examine and discuss public health issues and global solutions through a case-study approach.

VCOM campuses meet weekly from February through May to discuss public health case material. VCOM students then conduct global conferences with their international peers via video conferencing four to five times per year. An emphasis on producing student research across the three VCOM campuses through Global Seminar has resulted in poster presentations at numerous research recognition events including the Bureau of International Osteopathic Medicine (BIOM) and Via Research Recognition Day.
