Via Research Recognition Day in Virginia

T he twelfth annual Via Research Recognition Day at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM)−Virginia was held on February 24, 2017. Over 220 people attended the event, which featured research posters from students, faculty, and collaborative researchers in the region. Featured speaker Jonathan Kipnis, PhD, Harrison Distinguished Professor of Neuroscience and Director of the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG) at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, led a plenary lecture that focused on his breakthrough discovery of meningeal lymphatic vessels in the brain and their role in the regulation of immune response and brain drainage in neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. Guest Speakers Keynote Lecture: Creating Opportunities for

Osteopathic Medicine, presented, “Creating Opportunities for Osteopathic Research,” and hosted a pre-conference Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) workshop for first- and second- year students. John Winston, from American Defense International, Inc., identified governmental funding agencies where faculty can submit funding proposals. The Osteopathic Medical Network of Excellence in Education (OMNEE) sponsored a portion of the poster competition in which 30 medical residents submitted research conducted during their residency tenure. Medical students, faculty, and other participants submitted a total of 52 posters in the categories of biomedical, clinical, and educational research. Prizes were awarded to 21 research posters.
