VCOM–Carolinas Hosts First Research Day

O n April 1, 2016, VCOM–Carolinas hosted its first Research Day event. Coordination of this event on a second campus was inspired by the success of the VCOM–Virginia Via Research Recognition Day, in which a number of Carolinas faculty and students have participated. Research Day was a great success, thanks to the efforts of those who helped to coordinate, and all of the participants. For the event, VCOM welcomed two honored guest speakers, Timothy J. Yeatman, MD, FACS, director and president of the Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute and founding president and CSO of the Guardian Research Network; and Thomas Geisbert, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Yeatman gave a presentation titled “Sequencing Identifies New Biology of Colorectal Cancer,” and Geisbert presented on “Meeting the Ebola Challenge: Vaccines and Treatments.” VCOM students and faculty from the Virginia and Carolinas campuses, as well as researchers from the local community, spent the day sharing their studies and findings with other participants. The campus buzzed with the energy of the scientists who help to further the college mission, serving those most in need and promoting research activities to improve human health.
