V ia Research Recognition Day is an exciting and hectic time for the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) –Virginia campus. In addition to a successful execution, the organizers of the eleventh annual event, held Feb. 26, 2016, hoped to achieve one goal: “Empower participants to extend research beyond what is required by education or place of employment.” The message of this goal was echoed in the choice of speakers for the event. Justin McCormick, DO, director of the DO-PhD program at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, encouraged participants with success stories in research at his college. Stephanie Townshell, of the American Osteopathic Association, spoke about collaboration efforts in which participants could become involved. The group that spoke to the message most clearly was a team from the Carilion Clinic Neurosurgery Program who explained why and how research as a resident is accomplished. The team was comprised of Gary Simonds, MD, director of the Residency Training Program; Jordan Synkowski, DO resident in the Carilion Clinic Neurosurgery Residency Program; and Cara Rogers, DO resident.
