Campus Research Summary

F aculty at VCOM–Virginia continue to develop partnerships with research centers and research universities across the nation, and also locally at Virginia Tech, including the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) and Biomedical Engineering group (SBES). The area of greatest collaborative activity is in the newly formed VCOM-Virginia- C arolinas campus researchers have focused on conducting research to establish data to support grant applications to the NIH and research foundations. VCOM’s collaborative research programs with the Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute has brought about submissions to the NIH for grants. Promising research has been developed in our labs at R esearch initiatives at VCOM– Auburn continue to be in areas where faculty have formed successful partnerships with researchers from outside institutions, such as Auburn University. Orthopedics research, specifically focused on sports medicine and osteopathic medicine, joins VCOM faculty with researchers in Auburn University School of

Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine One Health Research Center, which announced its first round of pilot grants last fall. Biomedical faculty members have continued to publish their work in peer-reviewed journals, and many of the publications feature VCOM students as co-authors. Likewise,

One exciting aspect of our research is that students have been able to participate in research projects at Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute and Converse College. Research opportunities at VCOM–Carolinas Campus included community outreach,

Kinesiology as well as researchers at Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics Center. Other initiatives include medical genetics and primary care medicine, as well as research into how chronic diseases affect rural populations.
