T he newly constructed Shalom Family Medical Center, VCOM’s clinical base in El Salvador, was inaugurated during the VCOM–Carolinas outreach trip in October 2015. The Shalom Clinic provides care for more than 40 patients each day. Collaboration between the Shalom orphanage in El Salvador and the College began over five years ago.

This collaboration provides opportunities for medical students in El Salvador to participate in the VCOM’s Global Seminar course, on rotations in public health at Shalom Family Medical Center, and as translators during VCOM medical outreach trips Salvadoran medical students to receive a letter from VCOM and the Salvadoran Dean of Medicine in recognition of their Global Health competency. In 2015, VCOM faculty and medical students conducted First Responder training for employees of the Decameron Resort in El Salvador. The opportunity to provide medical education for the employees of this international resort chain will have far-reaching benefits for the VCOM International Outreach program. To further improve access to medical education in El Salvador, VCOM has developed a partnership with the Evangelical University of El Salvador Medical School.
