reasonable period of time or at all. Permanent withdrawals may be requested by the student or may be required by VCOM. Classifications for Withdrawal A request for a withdrawal, whether temporary or permanent, may be requested by the student to the Campus Dean for the following reasons: academic, administrative, medical, military, or personal reasons and must be pre approved using the processes outlined.
Academic Withdrawal Academic Withdrawals may only be granted as temporary withdrawals.
A Temporary Academic Withdrawal is requested by a student to pursue research, an externship, a degree-granting program outside of VCOM, or any other career advancing activity that will exceed 180-days leave; however, a Temporary Academic Withdrawal is limited to 12-months of withdrawal to assure the student has the ability to complete their medical education within six years. A Temporary Academic Withdrawal may only occur between the OMS 3 and OMS 4-year curriculum. Students requesting a Temporary Academic Withdrawal must be in good standing at the time of the request. A student who is granted a Temporary Academic Withdrawal who decides not to re-enroll in the VCOM academic program may be granted a Permanent Personal Withdrawal. Administrative Withdrawal Administrative Withdrawals may be granted as a temporary or permanent withdrawal. A Temporary Administrative Withdrawal is a school-mandated leave to address academic, professional, or technical deficiencies that will exceed 180-days. The Promotion Board, Professional and Ethical Standards Board, or Honor Code Council may recommend a Temporary Administrative Withdrawal for a student if they have academic, professionalism, or technical deficiencies not addressed by other types of leaves to the Campus Dean, who may grant or deny the withdrawal. Students who have not met the requirements to return to the academic program from a Temporary Administrative Withdrawal within the timeline specified by the Campus Dean may be dismissed. A Temporary Medical Withdrawal is requested by a student to address medical or psychological issues that interfere with their health and/or success that will exceed 180-days of leave, with reasonable expectation that the student will return from the temporary withdrawal and that the student is capable of returning to the curricular program and being successful upon the return. A request for a Temporary Medical Withdrawal requires supporting documentation from the student’s physician. While on temporary medical withdrawal, students are expected to receive appropriate care, resolve the issues that led to the leave, and develop new strategies through sustained therapy and/or meaningful work. A request for a Permanent Medical Withdrawal may be granted to a student experiencing significant medical or psychological issues where substantial evidence exists that the student will not be capable of successfully continuing in the curricular program. Medical Withdrawal Medical Withdrawals may be granted as a temporary or permanent withdrawal.
