Student rights under FERPA Under FERPA, students can: Inspect and review their education records Request the amendment of inaccurate or misleading records Consent to disclosure of personally identifiable information contained in their education record File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by VCOM to comply with this law Parent/Spouse and FERPA When a student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending a postsecondary institution regardless of age, FERPA rights transfer from the parent to the student (Students at this level of education are considered independent) The spouse of a student has no rights under FERPA to access the student's education record without the student's written consent
