VCOM College Catalog and Student Handbook

deemed necessary to ensure the safety of patients, the campus community, and the educational environment. Continued enrollment is contingent upon the student's ability to meet VCOM's technical standards, comply with treatment and monitoring requirements, satisfy clinical training requirements, and otherwise fulfill the professional and academic expectations of the program. The nature and duration of treatment will be determined by qualified healthcare professionals and may include ongoing monitoring to support recovery and ensure the student's ability to safely meet VCOM's technical standards and clinical responsibilities. Costs associated with evaluation, treatment, and monitoring are the responsibility of the student. Verification of successful treatment completion and compliance with any required monitoring will be overseen by the appropriate Associate Dean or other member of VCOM administration. Treatment records will be maintained in accordance with applicable confidentiality requirements and will be disclosed only as required by law, subpoena, licensing authorities, or as necessary to determine eligibility for continued enrollment. Current students and accepted students awaiting enrollment must report an arrest or charge for any illegal behavior, including substance use, whether guilty or not guilty, to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs within 72 hours from the time of the arrest or charge. Students who do not report such an arrest or charge are considered as acting in an unprofessional and/or unethical manner and will be referred to the Professional Ethical and Standards Board (PESB). Failure to disclose a substance use condition that subsequently results in impairment, patient safety concerns, professional misconduct, or violation of institutional policies will be considered unprofessional conduct and will result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal. Substance Abuse Prevention Information regarding the risks associated with the use of illicit drugs and the misuse of alcohol, including applicable health consequences and legal sanctions, is distributed annually to students and employees. This information is available through Student Affairs and online. Confidential counseling services are available to all students seeking assistance with substance use concerns; however, the cost of external counseling, evaluation, or treatment services is the responsibility of the student. In addition, all students and employees are required to complete VCOM’s alcohol abuse prevention program. Education regarding substance use, addiction, impairment, and professional responsibilities is also incorporated into the Block 1 Professionalism and Ethics course. Acts of Discrimination, Harassment and Violence All students or employees reporting acts of discrimination, harassment, and/or violence should meet with HR, administration, or faculty support administration to assure they are free from any further insult that could occur. VCOM seeks to strengthen the right to a workplace free of discrimination, harassment, and violence. VCOM maintains records of any discrimination, harassment, or violence complaints in the Human Resource office and discloses statistics of crimes reported to campus security authorities and local police agencies when they involve significant crimes against persons and personal property. In addition, VCOM provides this information for prospective students, families, and employees and potential employees of the institutions, so they may be better informed about the campus’ safety and procedures. VCOM policies include an annual notification of these policies and periodic faculty and staff development for all faculty and college officials on issues related to dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
