Introduction / Background
Key Structural Factors
Recommendations
A rapid literature review and grey literature scan were conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and resources from Feeding America, USDA, and local case reports. Findings were synthesized into thematic categories and validated against existing best practice frameworks. • Identify structural factors that influence food pantry sustainability. • Highlight best practices from successful case studies. • Provide recommendations for community-based organizations and policymakers. Methodology Food pantries play a vital role in addressing food insecurity in the U.S. However, their long-term sustainability depends on complex structural factors and implementation of best practices. This poster synthesizes findings from peer-reviewed research and real-world case studies to outline key drivers of pantry resilience and impact. Located in Roanoke, Virginia, the Manna Food Pantry operates as a core program of the Rescue Mission of Roanoke and serves as a case study of community-based food assistance. Established to meet rising local demand, it distributes weekly boxes of shelf stable staples, fresh produce, and proteins to hundreds of households Objectives
• Funders should prioritize infrastructure and data systems alongside food access. • Local governments can support policy alignment for zoning and licensing flexibility. • Pantries should consider integrating nutrition education, culturally relevant options, and fresh produce programs. • Technology and evaluation tools (e.g., Link2Feed) are essential for sustainability and impact measurement. Sustainable food pantries require more than food — they need infrastructure, partnerships, policy alignment, and evidence-based practices. This poster serves as a guide for stakeholders committed to building stronger, more responsive food systems. Conclusion • Martin et al. (2013). Public Health Nutrition • Handforth et al. (2013).
