PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to outline the guidelines for international research projects. VCOM does not offer an international research rotation option. However, students who are participating in an international clinical rotation may apply to conduct a specific research project during the rotation. Approval will be granted on a case-by-case basis, depending on site availability and pre-approvals as described in this policy. This policy establishes a standardized procedure for requesting research approval and may not be bypassed. Such a policy allows VCOM to implement best practices that protect both the international communities and our student body. 2. OVERVIEW International research requires special consideration by researchers and the IRB to ensure equivalent levels of participant protection are provided to research conducted within the United States. This guidance outlines researcher responsibilities and VCOM IRB considerations required to verify that adequate human participants protections are in place for international research under VCOM’s jurisdiction. Research conducted by VCOM students in foreign countries is under the purview and guidelines of the VCOM Institutional Review Board (IRB). While the IRB cannot impose its standards for written documentation on other cultures, all standards for ethical conduct and informed consent must be upheld.
