1. D EFINITION The titles Principal Investigator (PI) and Project Director (PD) are used synonymously by the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) to designate the faculty member or other individual who shall have the overall responsibility for ensuring that an externally funded project is carried out in compliance with the terms, conditions, and policies of both the sponsor and the College, including the monitoring of project expenses and submission of all required narrative and technical reports. Most important, Principal Investigators are responsible for controlling the academic quality of the activities they supervise. 2. E LIGIBILITY OF VCOM P RINCIPAL I NVESTIGATOR S TATUS The individual designated by VCOM as the PI/PD takes on the full obligations associated with the project, including all programmatic, administrative, financial management and compliance responsibilities of the project. At VCOM, principal investigator / project director (PI / PD) status is automatically conferred upon the following individuals: Full and part-time faculty members such as professors, associate professors, and assistant professors; Administrative deans and associate deans; Full and part-time professional staff members non-temporary positions; Full and part-time Research faculty members and Emeritus faculty and adjunct faculty as approved by the Provost, Dean and Executive Vice President.
