Policy #F001

4.2 The Review Process for Initial Appointment The Associate Dean and the Clinical Discipline Chair (when reviewing clinical track faculty candidates) will review the candidate’s initial application packet. All materials will be reviewed and considered by the Associate Dean in making a recommendation to the APT for promotion or tenure. All medical licenses for Clinical Track Faculty candidate packets will be reviewed by Clinical Affairs for previous or current disciplinary actions taken by a state medical board against a healthcare professional for misconduct, fraud, or violations of professional standards. Common sanctions include suspension, revocation, fines, public reprimands, or restrictions on a license, and are typically brought about by actions such as medical malpractice, substance abuse, criminal convictions, or patient abuse. Any actions will be reviewed by the Associate Dean and the APT Committee and may result in being denied appointment. The Associate Dean and Clinical Discipline Chair (when reviewing clinical track faculty candidates) will submit, in writing, to the APT Committee their recommendation for initial appointment. The letter of recommendation must outline the reasons upon which the decision was based. The letter must be submitted to the APT Committee as part of the candidate’s initial application packet. The Associate Dean will submit the candidate’s completed initial application packet to the APT Committee for consideration of initial appointment. Upon receiving the initial application packet, the APT Committee will review the packet and the recommendations for initial appointment of rank made by the Associate Dean and the Clinical Discipline Chair (when reviewing clinical track faculty candidates) and any other recommendations from the Discipline Chair(s), Course Directors, and research administration as appropriate. See Policy F007: VCOM Faculty Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure Policy and Procedures for more information on the APT process. 4.3 Offer Extension and Acceptance of an Offer Upon approval for initial appointment by the APT Committee, the Campus Dean will notify the candidate of their appointment in writing and will provide the candidate with the standard Preceptor Agreement for the candidate’s consideration. Clinical track faculty are those faculty who teach under a contractual services agreement with VCOM, rather than an employment contract, and who teach VCOM students in the clinical setting only. While these faculty provide dedicated time to the teaching of VCOM students, their primary duties are clinical practice for the clinical employer. Instead of an employment contract, these faculty generally hold: o A contractual agreement for teaching services between the faculty member and VCOM; whereby, the faculty member is paid according to teaching time or services performed in the clinical setting on an annual basis (paid for services provided); or o A contractual agreement with a VCOM affiliated academic health center or medical group that teaches VCOM students in the clinical setting while working for the employer, where the agreement outlines that VCOM must pay the clinical entity for the faculty member’s duties and the faculty member is to be paid by the employer.
